How to remove grease in the steering box?
I bought my Model A a few month ago. Today I wanted to check the oil level of the steering box - but there was no oil. Someone put grease in it. How can I remove the grease? Is it possible to solve it with kerosene? I hope I don't have to remove the steering box. Thank you in advance.

Re: How to remove grease in the steering box?
You might be better off just adding some light oil and it will help liquify the grease.

Yep, I agree. Just dig out what you can and then add the oil, heavy oil.

Thank you very much. I will try it with 600W oil.

Re: How to remove grease in the steering box?
If it's filled with grease, there's a good probability the seals are shot and even 90 weight will run right out - At least that's what mine did.
I'm waiting for it to stop leaking and add 600W which is not supposed to leak out. The only way that I know to get all of the grease out is to R&R the sector.

My neighbor built a gun looking adapter that fits on the end of his shop vacuum hose. It is amazing the amount of suction created when you go from a 4 inch opening and reduce if to a half inch orifice.

STP? Could you please tell me what it is? Here in Germany we don't know it.

Re: How to remove grease in the steering box?
The guys above know what to do, should like a good plan.
Is it a 2 tooth or a 7 tooth box? Either one, you may want to check on occasion to see if the oil you put in might get into the light switch down at the bottom of the column. If this happens, this may be the reason why they used grease.

Re: How to remove grease in the steering box?
before you put in the oil why not replace the end plate with either:
brattons' housing end plate #a3568-T and a new gasket. or: Snyders" a3568-t, and buy the steering housing gasket set #a3581-bs. or at least loosen the harness and see if the end plate has been retrofitted with the above parts. Or I guess you could add the oil and see what happens next. Bob |

Re: How to remove grease in the steering box?
If you decide to use STP, it has the consistency of honey and may pose a problem trying to pour it through the 3/4" fill port in your gear box. It will thin out if you heat it up.

Re: How to remove grease in the steering box?
Run hydraulic oil for awhile. That will soften and dissolve the grease
