Default Need help diagnosing adnormal sound.

Trying to help a friend out. he has a 1930 model a pickup truck. It makes kind of a howling grinding sound when you decelerate, especially when your in 3rd gear and are going 25 to 35 mph. doesnt seem to be coming directly fromthe transmission , or the engine, but we cant seem to pinpoint where its coming from, or what the problem is. Can anybody shed some light on possibilities?

thanks in advance, david

one possibility ::
speedometer cables can make a racket at times, unscrew it from the trans and retest

If it's not the speedo cable as Mitch said, then I'd check the ring and pinion. The pinion may have a loose bearing and shift enough during coasting to make the noise.

also check the rear axle nuts. good chance one of them is loose.

In this shop we re-torque to 80-90 ft-lbs
