Default 29 Cowl differences

Hello, I am green as they come, but I noticed that some 29 Town Sedan cowls are like the 28 and some are like the 30-31. Am I correct on this? Is there a late 1929 build that brought the newer cowl and used 28-29 fenders, running boards, and headlight bar? or Is it a Briggs vs Murray thing?

Both the Briggs and Murray built various '29 Fordor sedans with cowls very similar to the '30-'31 styles. Briggs made that type of cowl for their 60A Fordor in 1928. The '29 Briggs 68A Cabriolet also had the same cowl as the Fordors. Gar Williams

So its a Murray vs Briggs thing then? Murray used a newer 30-31 looking cowl on the Town sedans and Briggs used a 28-29 look with no belt line, right?

The Briggs and Murray cowls both would look similiar to the 30-31 to the uneducated eye. No offence by the use of the word uneducated. These cowls were used on the fordor, town sedan, town car and the convertable cabriolet there were some variations. there was a fordor cowl of this style built in 1928 that had a vent in the drivers side of the cowl. the fordor cowls of this style didn't have a cowl band or cowl lights. all of the other mentioned cowls did have cowl lights and cowl band. The Briggs built cowls had more wood and the windshield posts were made seperately and attached to the wood frame with nails. The later 29 Murray cowls had an upper dash panel that was more similar to the 30-31. All of these cowls used the same 28-29 gas tanks that was used with the tudor, coupe, roadster and pickup but was mounted under the skin of the cowl instead of being exposed as the other models. The firewall was not at all like the 30-31 but more like the 28-29 tudor, coupe and truck except there was a removeable panel between the tank and lower firewall that would have to be removed to remove the gas tank. No part of these cowls will interchange with the 30-31 cowls.

I forgot to answer a few of your questions. You say that you notice that some 29 town sedan cowls are like the 28 and some are like the 30-31. you ask is this correct. The answer is no. First the town sedan was not produced until 1929 and none were really like the 30-31. The taxi cab as pictured by Mot was the only four door car not fordor that had the coupe pillar type cowl and exposed tank. There was no late 29 model A that used the 30-31 cowl All of the 28-29 cars used the 28-29 fenders, running boards and headlamp bars. The pickups, AA trucks and station wagons used the exposed tank and coupe pillar style cowl with the 29 style fenders , headlamp bar and bumpers up untill around june 1930. The gas tanks in the early 30 trucks, pickup, and station wagon used the tab style gas cap instead of the threaded style caps. the trucks use a steel diamond tread running board instead of the matted style as used on the cars and wagons. There were many other variations like taller cowl posts on the trucks and wagons. I have probably missed several other small details but this should give the jist of the matter. Also none of these cowls are interchangeable with the 30-31 cars or vise versa.
