How about checking your point gap without ever opening the distributor? Adjusting the carb (carbs)? I suggest picking up an old Heathkit tune up meter ID-29. You only need to hook up 2 wires to the coil for checking tach. and dwell. I got one a short while ago and love it. Here is one that even includes the tach calibration cord. Heathkit Model ID-29 Automotive Tune Up Meter (note this is from NJ and I'm from Fl. so no, it is not mine.)
