line going to timing gear cover 46 V8
One of Tom's customers brought his A hot rod to the shop on a trailer so he could get help with questions about the body. The engine is a 46 V8. On the timing gear cover, drivers side there is a tube it is cut off that goes in to the casting on left of top. Right now it is just a stub of tube being held in with a flare nut. What might it be? And were did it go to? He hadn't noticed it and was not sure himself. I looked at the Green book, but not knowing what it was did not find it.
Thanks

Re: line going to timing gear cover 46 V8
On a 38ish it goes to the from the dizzy to intake manifold between the the 5-6 cylinder.
1938, It is a smaller line then the 1/4" fuel copper line. Vacuum to distributor brake. Later through the timing cover. . |

Re: line going to timing gear cover 46 V8
as stated its the vacuum for the distributor. if he has the stock intake manifold the line is available from the vendors. if you need to make a custom line, those are special fittings that crimp the line when tightened up to seal. only place i found any was nos at 3rd gen auto

Re: line going to timing gear cover 46 V8
It has custom headers, aluminum intake, 2 97's, Edmond heads and Edmond air cleaners. The distributor has been updated too so no vacuum needed, hole will just get plugged.
Thank for the information.

I'm with JSeary. That is a return line from the bypass filter. No kidding.

JSeery's picture is the oil filter line, agreed, and is on an earlier engine with the football distributor. The engine in question is a '46 with the rabbit ear distributor.

Re: line going to timing gear cover 46 V8
On my '46 to '48, 59 series engine, the stock timing gear cover has a threaded hole on top left side that accepts a vacuum line, and the opposite end of this line connects in the intake manifold. There is a cast or drilled hole inside the timing gear cover that completes the vacuum connection through a small hole in front of cover to a small hole in back of the crab/rabbit ear type distributor. This completes the connection to the vacuum brake inside the distributor.
The oil filter return line was connected to a threaded fitting on the left sidewall of the oil pan.

Re: line going to timing gear cover 46 V8
"Does it look like it is a factory type of connection into the timing cover" Yes it is inline with a rib cast in the cover. Not for a banjo fitting, small flare nut and maybe 1/4OD tube.

Think you can see the line from the timing cover to the base of the carb in these photos. Last edited by JSeery; 02-17-2019 at 08:25 PM. |

It is okay . . . sometimes we jump to a "confusion conclusion" and once that cements itself into our reptilian brains, it takes a huge amount of work to dislodge it! (Some would claim a complete mental reboot is required). Ask my ex wife how I know such things! LOL
