Shoebox Headliners

With the dwindling upholstery sources for our vintage cars I thought I'd just mention this company, Newstalgia. I badly needed a headliner (see pics) for my '51 Tudor, so I ordered one from these folks. The material was great, sewing was spot on, and the install went really nice. Much of their other offerings, like door panels are for cars of the 60's, but they do have a good coverage for vintage stuff regarding headliners.

Boy, that looks great! The headliner in my '51 coupe is in pretty good shape, but this makes me want to reconsider my decision to leave well enough alone. I would imagine that the most difficult part would be to fit it around the rear window. Was it?

It sure would have to be better than my previous attempt. I had '51 Fordor in he late fifties that must have been operated on mostly dirt roads. Every time I hit a bump, a fine layer of dust would filter down over everything. I didn't mind, but my GF at the time sure did. It got to the point that she refused to ride with me. In an attempt to remedy this, I carefully removed the headliner, dragged it downstairs, and loaded into my mother's washing machine with a good-sized dose of Tide. I then ran it through the dryer (I think that was my downfall). Of course, when I went to re-install it, it had shrunk (a lot). It was at least 4" short front to rear and 2" too narrow. Oh well, at least bare metal doesn't hold dust.

Thanks Denny, the rear window and C (?) pillars took the most time, I can't imagine NOT removing the window as some have done. Like the factory, the fabric folds over the lip that the window rubber seats onto. Gotta laugh at your story regarding the dust, I had some of that too, due to past occupancy of mice. In the first picture, in the lower left corner, you can see their "front door". All better now.

I'd be afraid of breaking the rear window when I removed it. Do they even make replacement glass?

Yes they do. Here is the new tinted rear glass going in soon. Removal is done by cutting the inside lip of the rubber, then you can just push it out.

did you insulate before you put up the headliner? I cannot stress how important that is to the comfort in the summer. I did mine 30 years ago with the technology that was available at the time. Now they have products out there that are so much better

I insulated the roof and sail panels on my Fordor when I did that.....Mark

Yes I did, used the same Dynamat that I used for the floor.
