Spare tire lock (FOX, A-18305) Is it 19" or 21"
I have a Model A spare tire lock.
The marking on it is A-18305, FOX Is it for the 19" or 21" wheel? What would the other FOX number be? Thanks, Neil |

According to the parts book, A- 18305 is a partial number. there is AR, C and D. This is for the entire assembly. The parts book does not show the lock by its self. You could buy the bracket without a lock, but no lock by itself as listed. The lock will fit either band.

Brian,
Thanks for the info. It is a complete assembly. How do I know if it is for the 19" or 21" wheel? Or will it fit either? Thanks, Neil |

you have a 29 tire lock band the number A-18305 tells you that I havnt seen a 18305 B but I do have a 18350 A2 ,I don't know what it fits as it bent the A-18305C is for the 30-31 cars the A is about 1/2 narrower than the C at the widest point the biggest difference is the back strap you can see the difference between the two years by the side by side comparison and the comparison with the ruler they are not interchangeable most of these are NOS ,but are shop worn ,so the measurements are pretty good as opposed to bent used ones the left two in the first photo are NOS ,the top one is a 29 ,the bottom is the 30,there is some subtle changes in the curves, but the numbers on the band will tell you what year you have I passed on one decades ago,NOS in the box,but it was the late 31 style without the lock cylinder I was appalled he wanted $25 for it without the cylinder tom |

here are some more photos the A18305 assembly is the whole assembly two bands, the lock body and the cylinder with key in 28-29,30 and part of 31 the cylinder was integral with the lock body In April 1931 the cylinder was left out due to people wanting one key for everything I assume (see the photo from the service bulletins) so they just added a cylinder with the correct key so you could buy the band, then buy a cylinder to match your ignition or door I don't find any evidence of the 18305 B or A2 bands but the C is listed for the 30 models I don't even know if a B , D or E band for the A exists I just don't have one,nor am I an expert on them in the later books the band is listed as AR,because it was a replacement for the 28-29 vehicles there is an ER listed also as repair stock in 1930 the Oakes and Fox bands had similar information stamped in the band its interesting the service bulletins states they are the same ,yet it says they are different for 30 31,and you can physically see the difference in them tom |

Has there ever been an additional article following the Nov-Dec 2004 one in the Restorer? The author mentioned a method of changing out the original swollen tumbler with a modern one - I have a nice 21" strap for my car but the cylinder is froze-up...

Talked to Howard Denker the author.
He has not come up with the perfect removal and a replacement lock for the frozen pot metal one. |

Thanks for looking into that for me - it's a shame but maybe with a little more interest someone will repop a kit to do just that.

This thread comes back to life. There's an ad for one of these on the MAFCA website which reminded me to search for info on them since I found one, key and all, under the back seat of my late 31 Tudor. The Google search brought me to this post. All I can say is thanks Tom and Google because you've saved me $ and hassle. I was just about to order a new locking door handle for my car since it didn't come with the door lock key, or so I thought. After reading what Tom wrote (in red text above) I went to the garage took the wheel lock key and tried the door handle lock...magic! My wheel lock is an Oates marked A-18305-D, so a D does exist.

Re: Spare tire lock (FOX, A-18305) Is it 19" or 21"
I am new owner of a Model A and new to this forum. Couldn't figure out how to post a new thread so I am responding to this one. My recently purchased 1930 Murray Town Sedan has two side mounted spare wheel and tire locks. My problem is that I do not have a key to unlock them. I would like to find a key rather than picking the locks. Although not original Ford accessory I believe they are period locks. I can not find any name or number identification. I am attaching pictures

Aretino
Here is one that locks 2 spare tire nuts and the tire valve stem. I have it on my coupe.

Re: Spare tire lock (FOX, A-18305) Is it 19" or 21"
Guys the B band was only for the Taxi Cabs which had bigger wheels. The D was used on the 31 bands that had the removable lock cylinder. It's body was about 1/8 inch thicker to accommodate the larger lock cylinder, and the door was installed upside down so the dent was convex instead of concaved. Arestorations
