Default Howell's Panel above deck lid 27 roadster

Has any Barner used Howell's panel above the deck lid on a 26 27 Ford roadster ? How can it be made to fit . Really only wanted a skin and i got this heavy piece with no curve to fit into the back of the seat pan or curve at the deck lid. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks Jim T.

It almost would have been easier to start from scratch. The only suggestion I have is to start shrinking that top flange and see if it will pull a curve into it without narrowing it down too much. Another alternative is to carefully cut the flange at the bend line and fabricate one with the curve needed then weld it back together.

That's a lot of work for something that should have fit from the get go. They didn't do anyone any favors.

The gauge of the steel is to much for my shrinker and I don't think it will pull a curve against the concave of the piece itself. Thank you for your information I am taking all suggestions into account at this time. I have repeatedly called and emailed Ryan but he refuses to answer my calls or emails. I asked him to send a Return Order and a Pre Paid Ups slip. I need to return this piece it is improperly made.

They are there just to show the lack of curves. No they are not upside down.

Welcome to Howell's. I bought a deck lid from them a few years ago. Did it fit? NOOOO. I had to open the upper and lower seams and rework it. After a few hours got it to fit. Painted it, installed it and then noticed the key hole. It was punched about an inch farther to the left instead of centered. Go figure. Also bought the panel below the deck lid and was surprised that it fit fairly decent. As for getting them on the phone? I think they are still using two tin cans and a string so it may take a while. Good luck Jim.

A lot of stuff like that is out there from different sources and has been for a while. A person can try to make it fit by cutting it all up and wheeling or pounding in the proper shape then welding the proper shape flanges and edges on. A person that has the equipment can do it a lot easier by starting with a flat piece of new sheet metal. That eleminates cutting it all up and better quality sheet metal can be used. It's sad what some folks will try to pawn off now days. Make one crappy part and it shoots a reputation to hell. The best policy is don't try to sell something that isn't at least close to properly fitting. Let some other shmuck sell the crap.

That's why I thru a 200.00 piece in the scrap pile. I ordered directly from Howell's and spoke to him once then he cut me off. I should have ordered it on EBAY then I would have some recourse. Well hindsight is 20/20. Jim T.

Seems the only solution would be to buy both the non curved panel to match the non curved decklid. Might as well get the lower panel too.

Ha. You threw it away?

I made my own. It doesn't matter much that the shrinker stretcher doesn't fit it. I've shrunk an edge by putting a claw hammer over the edge & giving it a twist. Hammer flat without making the "ting" noise. Do it several times (or several hundred)
