Default Is this an accessory?

Just got a 1928 open cab pickup and it came with this item? Anyone know what it might be? Looks like it may attach to the lip of the running board.IMG_0607.jpgIMG_0607.jpg

That was a aftermarket anti shimmy device for a worn out front end, when the owner was too cheap to fix it correctly.

The center piece clamps on the middle of the front axle, and the 2 'C' shaped ends of the spring fit onto the tie-rod.

We just drove horses, had no money for car, gas or tires. Fit our own horseshoes and soaked the wagon wheels in the creek before going to town.

Those stabilizers were still available in the 60s - 70s. Had one on our 30 CCPU before we rebuilt the front end - it did help reduce shimmy. The current version has a cylinder like a shock absorber:

Yup, as said was used/installed (on front tie rod). I gave mine to someone here years ago. The only thing that I could see it 'stopping', was the tie-rod from shaking/vibrating. The two little clamps is what held it in place.

IMO, a 'poor' band aid fix for something shaking and making noise ?

Sounds like what I need. Does she hand wrenches to you when you're under the car?

One of those was on my '31 DD when I got it. Didn't know what it was. They must be pretty common.

I'd put it on the car if it were mine. Why not, you have it and to sell it would not bring much money but a great conversation piece at shows.

These accessory units were not specifically for the Ford cars. They were a universal item made for all light-bodied cars, and was found in auto catalogs (like Western Auto, Wards, Sears, etc.) and on parts shelves around the country. They fit equally well on a Chevrolet, a Dodge, a Dort, an Erskine, etc.
