Pick-up bed wood
I am looking for the dimensions or a sketch for the pick-up bed wood floor on a 1930 Model A NARROW BED pickup if anyone has them.
Has anyone made their own and if so what kind of wood did you use ? Thanks , Mike |

Re: Pick-up bed wood
Hello Mike, I don't have any dimensions ,but I just did a Model T bed that I have as a trailer for my model A. I also have a 40 ford pickup that I put wood in the bed as a replacement for the original steel that was all rusted out. In both I used white oak as it is very strong and supposed to be more rot resistant than red oak. I used 1x6 material cut to the length of the bed and then ripped them down so they would all be the same width. Good luck, Frank

Re: Pick-up bed wood
What you want to know is on page 177 of the book,The Model A Ford as Henry built it.I don't have any way of getting it from a book page to the computer.I would use any wood you like.It is a pickup bed on an old truck, not a trailer deck.I did a bed in a 53 Ford for a woman with ash,she liked the clear/clean grain of it.I did another one in cherry, the owner liked the looks of the grain.I guess it would shatter if somebody dropped a big enough boulder on it.I have one that I took out of a bed made with pine beadboard. They didn't use any bed strips, just bolted it down.It was done by a newspaper carrier in the 40's,it still looks pretty good.I saved it,I might just use it again.

Re: Pick-up bed wood
Chief used 1/4 sawn oak, rubbed it with blue truck color, to show up the grain, then cleared it.

Sideboards from the same materials makes a CCPU look awesome.. White Oak is much better weather wise than Red Oak, which has a much more porous internal cell pattern.
