Default Source for clutch pressure plate springs

I would like to rebuild a stock A pressure plate. Anybody out there know of a source for the springs required? New of course...not used. Thanks for any contacts given.

If you don't already know the pressure and spring rate, try to find out. After considerable discussion with a clutch specialist, I have come to the conclusion that "A" pressure plates, as well as early V-8 pressure plates, are being rebuilt by clutch houses with much heavier than stock springs. They then require much more pedal pressure than OE.

If anyone knows the wire size, number of coils, OD and ID, spring rate, etc., of a correct OE spring, it might be possible to find them at McMaster-Carr or Lee Spring.

Start with the 1947-48 vintage Ford transmission and clutch rebuild book...it has lots of specs and adjustment info, with considerable coverage on rebuilding the '29-35 type pressure plate. I am not sure whether it give spring test specs (my office copy is missing right now, like most of may possessions at any given moment) but I think it does...at any rate, it is a useful book for this enterprise.
I am pretty sure the book is available in reprint.

The later stuff like a 51 Mercury Borg & Beck clutch cover for example, had different colored springs mixed in there depending on the particular part number. How to find out what the spring rate & hight/tension-color relationship of those springs might be may be difficult in some cases. A good reputable clutch rebuilder may have information that us laymen are not privy to but in any case they would probably have a "feel" for what replacement parts would work that are actually available today. Just try to find any information on clutch cover springs on the internet and you might come up shy of any good sources.

If all else fails, you might contact Fort Wayne Clutch and see what they say.

Mike the wire diameter and the OD of the coil and count the coils. Those items define the rate of a spring, assuming the steel is the same strength, which is pretty likely. A matching spring will be close. How to find them? That's tougher!

If you know the spring dimensions per Bruce's post, you can go to the Lee Spring website and enter the numbers to see if there is a match in their catalog.

After much searching for a source for clutch springs back in 2006, I found them available at the following place:

Machine Services, Inc.
1000 Ashwaubenon St.
Green Bay, WI Tel. 920-339-3000

The part number is: MA 104 001. The price at that time was $2.20 each plus shipping.

The dimensions for the spring is: Free length = 2.25", Outside Diameter = 1.038", Wire Diameter = 0.1435", Inside Diameter (reference only) = 0.70". The spring has 7 full coils with ends ground flat. The spring has 100 pounds of force when deflected to a length of 1.563".

I rebuilt 3 clutch assemblies at that time. Don/WI

ps. At the time I was not able to find a spring to match the original specs from any of the commercial spring manufacturers. A custom spring manufacturer in this area quoted a price of $1.05 each in quantities of 500. I was unable to find an outlet for that many springs. Keep in mind that this was in 2006.
