Default Old Grancor Automotive receipt

I was going through some papers I found in an old filing cabinet of my father's yesterday and found something interesting. Dad died over thirty years ago but I remember him telling me about a '49 Ford he had when we moved to Virginia from East Texas. He said he had "done a little work" on it to "make it a little peppier" as I remember it. Anyway I ran across this receipt that I thought some of you might like to see.

I am assuming it is for high compression heads, dual exhaust and an intake and 8CM carb but I am unclear on what a "DSM unit" is. Maybe someone could clear that up for me.

The DSM was a heavy duty coil.
Looking at that list, I think it is an exact copy of the Granatelli Recipe published in Mechanix Illustrated for Tom McCahill's Cadillac/Olds eating '49 Ford!
I bet Old Dad read that article and went straight to Granatelli with the parts list torn out of the magazine!
McCahill did this to a new '49, and for about $200 produced a car quicker than the accleration champ ('49 Olds) and faster than the speed champ ('49 Caddy) from his road tests...a very inspirational article indeed.

Bruce, I can believe that because Dad was an avid reader of McCahill's articles in Mechanix Illustrated. I would like to read that article sometime. Is it available online?

My copy is in a Fawcett book, "Sports cars and Hot Rods", I think Fawcett # 109. It's pretty easy to find. I might be slightly off, as there were several sequels to this title, but I think it's right. The same article probably appeared in the magazine, but I don't have it in that form.

Curious, wonder if it was indeed an 8cm backdraft carb

That was a fair amount of money in 1950 - about $2K in today's dollars.

But it was a lot less than the difference between a Ford and a Cad or Olds.

This: http://blog.modernmechanix.com/my-te...f-car-testing/ mentions the original article and gives the issue. I don't know if it is identical to what went in the book.

Do you suppose they are Grancor heads? Or maybe Federal Moguls?

I would assume Grancor; especially after the magazine article came out. Did they make Federal Mogul in 8BA style?

I'm surprised the engine ran as well as it did on the stock distributor with the dual carbs.
