Default Side-shift, open-driveshaft transmission question...

I have a transmission that I acquired a few years ago in a trade for some other Ford "stuff" and I am wondering what the application may be. It is a side-shift, open-drive shaft trans. that I would guess would have come from a pickup truck. For some reason I thought all of those were top-shift transmissions. Were some of them column-shift?

The transmission is apart but complete. I've added a couple of photos.

Thanks

F-1's came with column shift from '51 on.

I can't tell you about commercial column shifts, but many have been modified over the years. The serial number on the case might give you some hint of the year or application of the case.

As I recall, the 3 speed 1/2 tons were column shift, and 4 speeds in both 1/2 & 3/4 tons
were all topshift versions.

The commercial (F1) ones for 1951 may have had the late type gears. It is easy to convert the old side shift types to open drive if a person has the parts to do it out of the commercials from 1942 thru 1950. All a person needs is the rear support housing and the mainshaft.
