Was this an option, or was it standard on certain years ?

The powerhouse generator was used from BOP through July of 29. There were three versions of the powerhouse, P1, P2, and P3. The long generator was introduced in Oct. of 28, so there was an overlapping period from Oct. 28 through July 29 when both styles were used. It's all in the Judging Standards.
