Default Shackle bushings/studs

Having just pulled apart original shackle studs & bushings, and comparing them to an older replacement NORS on, there was big difference in the packing material between the stud & bushing. On the original one the stud was fluted and the packing was densely packed fiber, likely asbestos. On the NORs one the stud shaft was smooth, and was packed in the bushing with a rubber liner. To me it seems that the original one would perform better to provide the torsional control over the stud and the spring it was mounted on. See photo. The stud in the back is original and the one in front is NORS and the rubber bushing out of the shell is front of that. If the original type are better, how can you Identify those type shackle bushing before buying them ?

This has been addressed numerous times and yes, the original are FAR better than the repops.
Original pieces have the Ford script stamped in to the metal shell.

And please, don't be one of those clowns that grind the outer shell down so it is easier to install.

Mike,

While many are stamped with the Ford script, more than a few of the NOS ones have no script. The asbestos lining was adopted with the '33 model year after a rubber lining in thee '32 version proved to be inadequate. They (NOS studs) are becoming scarce, especially the perch side versions and very scarce with the longer studs with holes for cotter pins used prior to the '35s.

Maybe he is measuring total length of the pin and not bushing length?

Contact Fred (barnfind08) @ Southside Obsolete. I bought some front ones from him in the last year. The ones I got from him did not have the cotter pin holes.

You're probably correct. That is of course not the correct way to identify these.

Easy enough to modify for the pins.
