Default New e brakes, now cannot get the drums on??

So just installed the E brakes which came with the car. New linings were installed. Now I need to force the drums on with nut and washer but wheels will not turn. Wheels turned just fine with the service brakes, do not seem to have any play in the E brakes. How tight should the axle nut be?

IVe heard the new lining for Ebrakes they sell is too thick, not much you can do besides shave it down IF the brake bands are fully retracted.

I've seen the Ebrake lining not tight all around on the band on repros. This creates interference with the drum.

E bands have an inner and outer surface. Are they on the right way? If not, then they will seat on the carrier on an angle and make it very difficult to get the drum on.

I just measured the inside diameter of the e-brake area of an original drum. The diameter of that area is 9 5/8 inches. If you measure across the e-brake assembly it must be a little less than 9 5/8 inches in order to slip into the drum.
I have installed several new cast iron drums and found this area had to be cut in the lathe to the correct dimension. Doing this, so far I have not had to remove any of the ebrake lining.
Your situation may vary.

I replace my e brake linings a while back, and had a similar experience, I simply shaved down the linings in places and it eventually worked. Mine didn't need to be shaved evenly across the whole band, just in a few places.

The pre-drilled linings I had did not have holes in the correct positions. This caused the lining to buckle up in between rivets. I ended up buying un-drilled linings. By drilling and riveting one hole at a time, the lining was tight to the band all around and fit in the drum.

Have you tried disconnecting the e-brake rod from the e-brake lever behind the backing plate?
Might be the rod is adjusted for previously worn out lining and now you have new.

This could be a possibility too

Yes, rods are disconnected. By what method should they be shaved? Grinder? Or filed! Thanks for the measurement details, I will check meas. In am.

There are 2 different hole patterns for the rivets, so likely you were sent the wrong ones. The predrilled ones I installed fit good, but did need to remove some material with a flapper disc on the grinder. Not really a big issue since I expected that might be the case

I had to thin out the E-brake linings for the 1930 AA I worked on. I used a hand belt sander, and it worked fine.

I agree with Mitch, I always turn the e- brake surface on new drums as well to true up and give a little relief with new linings . Sometimes I take a little off the outside of the lining on my brake machine . A flat belt sander or round disc sander will help you just the same .
As randy gross mentioned make sure you have them seated properly in the carrier plates and all springs on correctly to pull them in the the rest position . Maybe post a photo if problem is still present after all that

80 grit sandpaper works on the linings.

Yep, just fitted new e brake lining and similar problem that they are slightly overlarge. I ensured that all linkages etc were snug, a bit of judicious trimming with sander on the lining and then a " bedding in drive" drive has got them just as they should be - but what a palaver drilling and riveting these undrilled linings!
