Champion H-9 plugs
Guys I picked up a set of five ribbed H-9 plugs for our 52 F1 build. They have made in Canada rather than US but figure that is closer to original than new Autolite 216’s if we ever show it.
The plugs have a very fine rust and corrosion in spots. Any ideas on rust removal and restoration to keep from rusting? JB |

Re: Champion H-9 plugs
Removing the rust may also remove the bluing. Converting the rust to iron oxide would not remove any bluing, and the resulting color of iron oxide would be a close match to the bluing. A product that does that is Rustmort, available at paint stores. I would brush it on liberally, let it dry overnight, then buff it off. I believe you'll see results better than you could imagine.
A word of caution: I would try it on a small area of one plug first, just to experiment. I know for a fact that a rusty floorboard can be miraculously transformed with this stuff. P.S.~ You do know that you can get H10C plugs (super cheap) at hardware stores and blue them yourself?

H9 (USA) plugs are often offered on eBay. They are quite reasonable as well - especially the five rib variety.

Re: Champion H-9 plugs
Good intel guys, thank you. I am going to restore these as suggested but it seems like a waste from a looks/time perspective. I am pretty sure the plug boot is going to cover the top of the plug where the Champion H-9 logo is, and the bottom of the plug is all you will see, which is almost identical to the 216’s.

These were the ones I'd mentioned in an earlier post that are frequently on eBay... they usually bring about $10 each, sometimes a bit more. If these were two rib H10's I'd be al over them Those bring $55+ each.

Re: Champion H-9 plugs
Mike, I was not sure of the cutoff year for two rib Champions for trucks or cars.
What do you say? I just put them out there to be seen. They look like they were just made. I think you should do a Forty Truck! |

I'm not 100% certain when the two rib ended and the five rib started. I think 1942... I think.
