Disc brakes swap/old advertisments
Hi Guys. My Name is Thomas and I am from Germany.
I bought a 1938 Ford Coupe Standard in the Staates. The Ford is modified with an 8 inch rear end, 5 speed transmission and disc brakes in the front and is lowered 4 inches in the front. In Germany we have to go trough an officiall inspection to get number plates for an oldtimer. The car has to be originally or "smooth" modified. Everything without the disc brakes works for him. But he said if I can get a documentation or an old advertisment from the 50's to the 70s where he can see that disc brake swaps in these old Fords where made in this time would help him and especially me to make it legal. Can anyone help or got an idea? Sorry for my bad english. Greetings from Germany Thomas |

Re: Disc brakes swap/old advertisments
Seems like any early 1970s "Rod & Custom" Magazine would have several ads for that sort of thing. Pete & Jakes was going gangbusters, as well as others during that intense period of "street rod" development and glory! DD

Re: Disc brakes swap/old advertisments
Not sure if it will help you because I don't have the issue, but the July 1975 issue of Hot Rod magazine has an article about disc brake conversions. Should be easy enough to score a copy of that. Perhaps better yet, Speed Mechanics September 1953 has an article on Kinmont disc brake conversions, in fact it's the cover photo.

Re: Disc brakes swap/old advertisments
It even says super safety brakes on the bottom of the cover. Doesn't get any better than that. We can overlook that kinmonts don't have much in common with a modern disc brake, not really the point.

For the past 40 years the pinto Mustang fron suspension has been a favorite modification to these cars to improve handling and braking.

Re: Disc brakes swap/old advertisments
The Summer 1971 edition of Street Rod Quarterly had a step by step article on installing Mustang disc brakes on an Early V-8 Ford.
Reread the article last night and it pertains more to Model A and 32-34 models and adapting hubs for wire wheels. Last edited by Zeke3; 06-27-2020 at 08:56 AM. Reason: Add information |

Re: Disc brakes swap/old advertisments
As I recall early Volvo disc brakes were a popular swap onto old Ford spindles.

Late Seventies, and the superbell disc brake kit had been out for a couple of years.
