Driving Red Canyon

This was just a quick overnighter to Bryce Canyon National Park, Red Canyon, and Zion National Park 600 miles over the two days. I had previously treated Bryce Canyon National Park (here: http://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=97822) and Zion National Park (here: http://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=128820) but hadn't previously adequately treated Red Canyon. It is a canyon through which the road cuts up the same plateau that Bryce Canyon National Park is on. But, since the road goes through the canyon it is better for taking pictures with the car in it than Bryce Canyon National Park because all of its roads are along the edge of the plateau so it's hard to get any good pictures of the car and those formations.

On the way Friday night I noticed my back left taillight not working. I opened it up and wiggled the bulb and it came back on. The next night, however, when I filled up with gas about dark I noticed nothing was shining on the back end. No taillights nor license plate light. I knew that wasn't all loose bulbs and didn't want to tear into the wiring and/or switch so I was glad I had my stash of Harbor Freight hazard lights. I loaded them all on the back along with my reflectors and drove the last 150 miles with all of them flashing. I expect it was quite a sight approaching from the rear but no one hit into me when they were going 85 mph and I was going 65.



The six triangular lights are the Harbor Freight hazard lights that I had flashing. The others are reflectors.

It was 6° when we woke up in the morning at Bryce Canyon but Old Henry started up just fine.

Beautiful scenery! Nice to see all the trees mixed in with the rock formations. Usually not the case in desert country.

We have visited that area and parks. Pictures are beautiful but it is spectacular in person.

Old Henry...Thanks for the pictures. My wife and I have made the same drive two times, albeit not in a vintage vehicle. It was during the early Summer when we were there. The snow sure changes the appearance. The first time we discovered it by accident. We wanted to go see the North Rim but got there before the road was opened so we went to Kanab and visited Zion...ended up extending the stay there a few days. We went back the next Summer and stayed in Kanab for a couple of weeks using it as a base and then drove up to SLC before heading Northwest. Last Summer we drove over to Canyonlands and Arches for another visit while we were in Ouray, CO for a couple of weeks using it as a base. By the time we got home on the first trip, we had driven a bit over 15000 miles. The second trip we held it down to 11500. We live in a beautiful country. I guess it is one of the reasons my projects sit unfinished.

WOW ! Beautiful country that I will never see in person, thanks for sharing. I remember bringing an old Lincoln four Dr. convertible back from California and having a rear light problem like yours, just getting dark coming into Albuquerque, NM and had to use flashers till we found a motel for the night. Pretty scary with heavy traffic around five or so !

That's a great trip and good backup idea for taillights. Might be a good idea for all night driving with our older, usually slower Fords. I really liked the Cedar Breaks National Monument area between Bryce & Zion on Rt 143.
