Default what type of sealant for new top?

Hi folks, can someone recommend a sealant when replacing the top material on a 34 tudor? I have a tube of DAP black silicone but I tested it and I would have less than 30 min to tack it all down. The kit directions says to not tack it all the way down and then lift it to do sealant, I would rather not attempt that especially since the 34 has a molding you tack through. I know there is a gasket type sealant that does not harden all the way, would that seal/work well? What did you use? Ken

A glass bedding compound might be worth looking into. It comes in a tube for a caulking gun and will not dry out. Any automotive paint store should have some. It's intended for sealing but not for adhesion. 3M is the brand that I've used.

Have never used it for your application but it may be worthwhile looking into

Urethane seam sealer.

I used this stuff on my Model A top. You can tool it with a wet finger.

hey ken, i am doing this now too. just got done grinding off all the rivets to remove the channel parts. the sealer under the channel is still soft in places, and bare clean metal underneath in some spots too. amazing since this was not a nice clean body to start with. some of my channel is rusted, i have some good extra parts, but not sure i have enough to build a good one. same with the trim parts on top. i was thinking, since i already have copied your battery box, you would really be a nice guy if you put up a nice "how to" thread on the tops!, all kidding aside, i think the RV industry has sealer stuff that does not harden or shrink. i will look abit later

Among the many forums I visit, for auto work I see silicone reported as a short-lived material whereas automotive grade Butyle (sp) caulking is best with reference to that being available at NAPA. I've used the latter type for sealing body panel joints and exterior window trim.
