I meant the TERM National Pipe Thread is in fact National Pipe Taper.

I would think so since that's where Ford originally had the sensor.Its in the path returning to the radiator(not from).If a thermostat is used its at the top of the outlet of the head.

I was actually asking about the ports behind the water pumps, near the bottom of the block that he mentioned, I hadn't noticed them before so I will have to have a close look when I get back to the shop.

The lower 1/4 NPT ports are a great place for a water petcock . . . makes draining each side of the block easy. If you are using a temperature sensor to drive a fan relay, then it should be at the TOP of the head - where it is the hottest.
