Question Replacing clutch assembly Question

When replacing clutch on a 40 convertible should I disconnect springs from the chassis by loosening the U bolts and leave springs attached to running gear or use a spreader and leave springs attached to the chassis ?

Thanks
Warren

That's what I do, get the U bolts out of the way, jack the frame up high enough , put the frame on jack stands and just roll it back on a floor jack under the rear. G.M.

I agree with Rich. Makes it a much easier task to leave the spring attached to the axle housings. Roll the entire rear axle/ torque tube, etc. rearwards about 6" - 8" and you will be all set to remove the transmission.

Still , be aware that the spring is then held together by iust the small centre bolt.

I concur as well. I have removed and done this many times. the V8 spring does not have the same tension on it as a Model A spring. If you feel more comfortable wrap a chain and secure around both sides of the leaves. Pull rear axle back and remove trans from the top. Piece of cake...

Thanks everyone for your advise and prompt replies.
The reason I asked ,I was told the convertible has an X frame that is different than the standard 40 frame and that his would make it more complicated to remove the spring. Apparently not the case.

Thanks again;

I find it almost easier to pull the engine, I don't have to roll around on a creeper. Walt

But then, the creeper comes in handy for whenever your nap time is!
