Differential (axle) problem
Hi all,
I pulled my differential apart today outofmy 1 1/2 tonne truck to check the bearings and see if i needed to replace them. When i pulled it apart the bearings seem ok but i found inside the axle tube some gouging and a piece of metal welded to the axle. I think it may have had a bearing failure years ago before i got it. Has anyone else seen this? Trying to work out if it will be ok. 20190202_151546.jpg Thoughts? Cheers Corey |

Re: Differential (axle) problem
So i decided to pull the axle out of my other truck bod today, i t h en pulled the axles out and everything inside looks perfect( other than the sludge called thats supposed to be oil!)
So i will use this differential, and replace the bearings while apart. I have read the slave cylinders and brake shoes etc are hard to get and I'm better off having the shoes repadded. Or am i wrong and someone sells them? Cheers Corey |

Re: Differential (axle) problem
I would figure on getting the shoes relined. Someone may have new or NOS shoes out there but a person would have to get the part number from the chassis parts catalog and start chasing them down. It's more likely that you would find someone that may exchange relined shoes for your cores. Finding out what part numbers you need for the other brake components should help in your search for them too.
That damaged axle housing may be usable but a person would be better off to use a good housing just to be safe. |

Re: Differential (axle) problem
That is common on 3/4 ton up trks. I would not worry about it. There are service people that will come to your vehicle and replace a snout. They carry blanks, cut the old one off, center a new one and weld it on.

I will go with the spares differential, as it shows no sign of damage and is in good condition. I will pull the pads off and get them relined and souce the new cylinders etc. Are the one tonne slave cylinders the same as the 1 1/2 tonne? I will try and get to pull the old ones out when i get a break from work. Cheers Corey |
