Default Sector shaft removal

Hello all, I've looked but cant find anything related to my question. On my 28 roadster 7 tooth steering gear. Is it possible to remove the pitman arm and the sector shaft adjuster cover and wiggle the old sector shaft out for inspection? Can it be done without removing the column?

The short answer is Yes, ...kinda, -but not advisable by most. Can you disassemble the housing in the car if you remove the starter, floorboards, and the pedals, -and then remove the gearbox from the frame? Yes, ...but the column will still need to be removed from the tank bracket. By the time you have done all of that, you may as well just take the column from the car to the workbench.

The Service Bulletin of April 1928, Page 242 may be of help.

I would have to think the shaft fits through the rail, it's already through the frame now. Doesnt the steering gear and sector slide through the rail during installation? I'm wondering if the shaft can slide out towards the engine side once the end cover is removed. No?

I don’t think you can actually remove it. There isn’t enough space to get it all the way out. But you might could get it far enough out to inspect whatever you’re concerned about.

I'm thinking I'll just pull the column, I was hoping I wouldn't need to.

If you have Les Andrews Vol. 1, it covers exactly the same material as that service bulletin. It's good to have the bulletins anyway, but the one Bob's referring to is not unique.
