Full flow oil filter
Many years ago my dad bought a Motor City Flathead full flow oil filter. Dad is not with us anymore but the filter and some other flathead stuff is. Am in the middle of a 32 Highboy build with a 59 block.
Is it worth using the oil filter and looking for a place to mount the filter if I do. Any pics out there? tim |

Re: Full flow oil filter
Peruse these links and you'll get some ideas.
Probably be the firewall or mounting it on the cylinder head. https://www.google.com/search?q=full...low+oil+filter |

Re: Full flow oil filter
On my 39, I have it mounted in the back of the fender well. I would try to put it in some obscure place.

Re: Full flow oil filter
I usuly mount them behind the steering box on the frame. Easy to change filters, less messy. I also use the 95% system easier to install, when building an engine.

Re: Full flow oil filter
Here are a couple of pictures of the MCF installation on my '32. I made a bracket that bolts to the left side unused mount threads next to the crank.

Re: Full flow oil filter
Any way to put filter return line in oil pan without removing pan?

Re: Full flow oil filter
Have the same system. Mounted the filter on the frame behind the drivers side running board. Easy to get to and not cluttering the eng. compartment.

Re: Full flow oil filter
No way to put that in the oil pan without removing. The supply lines for mine go directly from the oil pump, out through the oil pan fitting, through the filter and back into the block near the oil pressure sending unit. I have put about 4000 miles on this set-up with no problems. I believe my set up came with a stronger "Melling" type oil pump. Got it long ago from Hot Rod and Custom Supply which is no longer around.
I first found out about the system in Frank Oddo's "Ford Flathead V-8 Builders Handbook. (page 87-94} Shows photos and covers the modification quite thoroughly. Last edited by chap52; 12-21-2015 at 01:23 PM. |

The MCF system uses a modified oil pump which requires the pan to be removed and the 3/4" exit hole to be made. Oil is then pumped though the oil pan fitting, into a full flow fliter, and back into the block at the top rear main galley, where the original pump delivered oil. |

Re: Full flow oil filter
Do yourself a favour and use aeroquip AN screw to gather hose and fittings, not the push lock stuff and a hose clamp.

Re: Full flow oil filter
Ok, I'm familiar with that setup, I considered that an engine mod, maybe the wrong word to use!

Re: Full flow oil filter
Lawrie, all my fittings are Aeroquip, along with compatible premium push-on Goodyear hose. I added the clamps just for extra insurance, but have never had or heard of a problem. Would appreciate any issues you know of, or have had with push lock hose.

There is a way, but maybe not to everyone's satisfaction. An old timer, who I got a pan from, brazed a male fitting onto side near bottom of pan. To look at it, did not look bad at all. He just drained pan, cleaned area and brazed fitting. |

Re: Full flow oil filter
So, we're not looking for an oil pan return line are we? The line to the engine would be the oil sender location, the pan fitting is the pressure line from the pump, correct?

Re: Full flow oil filter
I believe this is what kind of setup V8Bob has. Maybe not the exact one, but similar idea.

Both correct, except the MCF system uses a ss braided hose instead of a solid line. The MCF system has been around for well over 20 years. Surprised so many flathead guys are just discovering it! :-) Last edited by V8 Bob; 12-20-2015 at 04:57 PM. |
