Hershey Rain Score: 1937 Ford V8-60 sedan
Hi folks,
I'm new to the Ford Barn, but have been on the HAMB since 2006. I have '40s style 1931 Model A coupe and a 1937 Ford sedan. I picked up this 1937 Ford Touring sedan at 2013 Hershey. It's an all original, 95% rust free car. Stored in a barn since 1975 I plan on cleaning her up and running the wheels off it. These pics were in the fall when I brought the car home. Current plans call for adding a second tail light, 6V turn signals tightening up the mechanicals. I'll be posting more shots in the spring when I get it into the shop and start working on it full swing.

Welcome to the Barn. That 37 looks great and your A is similar to mine which is always a plus.

Welcome to Fordbarn. I think I saw that nice looking '37 sedan at Hershey last year. Get it in good mechanical condition and drive it.
Are you planning to keep that little 60 HP engine in there?

Re: Hershey Rain Score: 1937 Ford V8-60 sedan
I found the car over in the Red Field near the stadium where I set up. Right now it runs and drives pretty well. The tires are hard and shot and the front end needs king pins. Tires, steering, and brakes will come first. I'm kicking myself now because I practically gave away a complete mint '38 front end at Hershey two years ago that I could have slid under this car. And this car is an I-beam axle car not a tube.
The mechanical brakes work pretty good and I have a complete set of like new extras in the garage. I had the car up to 45 mph a few times and I thought it stopped well. The HAMB guys all wanted me to switch to hydraulics, but I don't plan on daily driving the car (on account of the 60 is wound out at 50 mph and it's a little slow out of the hole and I have a 40 mile commute) and like Henry said it's got "The safety of steel from pedal to wheel!" The V8-60 is a tin motor, has a replacement head on one side and a 59 carb instead of an 81. It runs good, smokes a little, and the left water pump is leaking. This season I'm going to try it with the 60hp, but have a line on a complete 85hp '38 drivetrain that a street rodder is pulling out so I'll have that as a backup. I like hot rods, but this car is so nice and rust free and original that I want to try and keep it that way. Now I have something to take to the big AACA show in town. Rust free pre-war Fords are hard to find so when I saw it I thought it would be a good car to own. I will be slowly adding some accessories like mirrors, fog lamps, clock, and radio as money allows. The paint is fair and with some touch up will do for quite a while. The interior is rough, but original and fits the car.

With proper tuning the original brakes can stop just as well as the early hydraulics.

That's what I thought too. I think it stops good now and that's with slop in the cables. Once I tighten and adjust all four corners it should stop good. I also read that woven shoes are better on the mechanicals as it takes less effort to stop than "regular" shoes. Haven't had the drums off yet, but I know a real good brake guy that could probably make me a set.

Re: Hershey Rain Score: 1937 Ford V8-60 sedan
Normally a V8 60 can be tuned and massaged to run quite well...a rebuilt 81 carb, rebuilt distributor and freshened coil, plugs and plug wires can go along way if the ring blow by is not too bad..check the compression.....I have two 60 powered cars and would never take them out as they run great with the above mentioned tweaks..don't forget that the rear end is probably a 4.44 and you likely have the small 60 transmission...the brakes can be adjusted to be pretty decent.....Rich Willim has a book out on the V8 60 which is a must to own...Good luck with your Hershey find..I saw it there...keep it stock Henry!

Hard linings on mechanical brakes is the biggest no no. Compare it to playing basketball, would you rather wear your soft soled sneakers or your hard soled dress shoes?

Re: Hershey Rain Score: 1937 Ford V8-60 sedan
Yup it's the small tranny and 4.44 rear gear. The car has new plugs and wires, but can't verify what the distributors look like on the inside yet. The water pump leak seems to be the biggest problem so far. I have really only driven the car twice and had a it running a few times as winter came so fast and I had two other projects going before that. This spring I'm going to pull the front sheet metal off so I have good access to the engine.
I need to replace the water guage as it's busted. The oil sender works. What pressure does the 60 usually operate at? This engine seems to have around 40 psi cold, but then goes down to around 20 psi hot. I'm not sure what viscosity oil is in it right now. I'll probably run 15-40W diesel oil in it, but need to do some more reading first. I'm keeping my eyes open for an 81 Stromberg, but I know they are pricey and the 59 seems to work okay. The engine fires right up and doesn't seem to run rough or bog when driving it. I think the 59 was used on the '46-'48 truck motors? Like I said, this is my first "stock" car and I'll definitely have some fun with it. I'm mired in an OT late model Ford truck rust-o-ration right now or I'd have the '37 in the shop now!
