New Forged pistons
I was at a shop today that was assembling a 304 flathead with a Speedway stroker assy. This included a set of Moly(sp??) forged pistons. Unusual design very light. Anybody have any information on them??

Re: New Forged pistons
The Speedway stroker kit uses a Scat crank and rods and Ross forged pistons.

Ron, the ross pistons we use have FHF on the underside of the piston crown,

Re: New Forged pistons
I have had excellent results for quite a few years using low-expansion alloy forged pistons from Arias in both street-driven and vintage racing engines. I believe they would also work great in Flatheads. http://ariaspistons.com/

Re: New Forged pistons
You guys don't understand. These pistons came with the Speedway kit and the pistons came in a box called moly (sp?). THey are NOT Ross and don't look anything like them. Nice light forged piston. Instructions called for .0025/.003" piston to wall clearance for street. Definitely something new.

Re: New Forged pistons
By George Ronnie, I think you've got it. Now all we need is a parts list of what's available for the flathead. Surprised Speedway would offer such high quality, unless their cheaper than the Ross. They have a very unusual way of balancing them. they remove the material from under the dome.

Re: New Forged pistons
Mahle has been the dominant supplier to German companies for many many years.
I found them to be very high quality. JEGS has the specs with each part #. Looks like multiple compression ratios are avaialble: http://www.jegs.com/p/Mahle/Mahle-Po..._SKU%7C0&Nty=0 |

Probably metric widths which is ok easy to get. R Last edited by Ronnie; 02-19-2014 at 04:54 PM. |

Re: New Forged pistons
The Mahle brand Flathead pistons have been out for a short time now.
A friend is a dealer for them, we had the opportunity to see them a while back. They are a decent piston and they are readily available for the same combinations as all the other vendors. After checking them out we decided to "stay the course" with the Ross line, we can get either, but on our builds here it will be Ross for now! Thanks, Gary in N.Y. P.S. Almost ALL "top-of-the-line" race pistons today are on the "2618" platform as opposed to the "4032", not a real big deal in the Flatheads strengthwise, but the 2618's are stronger and we've found last longer in race situations. If a customer wants the "4032" material I have no problem with that, I just no longer recommend it.

Re: New Forged pistons
Summit has them listed at $608, that's quite abit more than the Ross. Both pistons are over kill for a street engine

Re: New Forged pistons
The Mahle forging would be far superior to Ross for any long term usage such as a street engine. The high silicone content and much better stability of the 4032 chemistry and the reduction in thermal expansion would make it ideal for daily use.
The Ross 2618 would be better for "race-only" applications because it is less rigid(more forgiving) and less prone to damaging detonation when used with nitrous or supercharged. Yes, both are "overkill" for the daily driver. |

Re: New Forged pistons
Seems like none of the advertising photos show the actual Flathead piston. Anybody have access to one for an accurate description of the design? Mahle's listing says 1/16, 1/16, 3/16 for the ring pack, nothing on pin specs.
I'm interested in the skirt design and length as well as the weight of the piston without the pin and rings. One site says 348 grams, but doesn't say if it's bare piston or complete assembly. A photo would be very nice. Flat32 |
