That is a legendary but seldom seen, very rare, Goldberg Regenerative Flatulance Heater. It was actually powered by the passengers from inside the car and ran on natural gas. It reached its peak production figures during the Depression when the diet of most of the population relied on beans for protein. It was invented by a gentleman named Rube Goldberg. It fell out of favor after WWII. No one is quite sure why.

Looks like a hot air heater that fits around the muffler.

That's an interesting right hand drive car, instead of using all that
monkey motion for the accelerator linkage they just put the
carburetor on the left side.

I've seen ads for them from back in the period and they were sold on the cheap. Like $4.95 for the kit. I think they were low-end universal type heaters that could be installed on most any car. As to how well they work I don't know. From the way they look I would bring my heavy coat if it was cold ouside.

My 28 appears to have had one at one time because my curtain pan in the rear floor has a hole cut in it for the flex pipe and has the rear floor grate. The front of the heater has a flex pipe and scoop to gather forced air from the fan. Seems to me it would give out good heat. At least for the back seat passengers.

I still think the cleanest installation would be an under floor hot water heater, and will be working on mine after I get other projects done first.

Had one of the under-seat hot water heaters in my first car;back about 1955, 1947 Chevrolet Fastback or "Torpedo" as we referred to them when I was a mere lad. I have thought that it would be a great heater in my 29 Sport Coupe. If I can ever get the seat back far enough so I can get in to drive it!
