Default ammeter problems

I have what I think is a repop ammeter that is not working properly. It is at 3 amps plus when the car is off and goes to 18 when I am running the car then when I shut the car off it is at 10 til I tap it and goes back to about 3plus. Are these difficult to repair?

Easier to replace. Use an original if you can find one (I've been looking for over a year without success).

A drop of oil on each of the 2 pivot points helps, and you can bend the needle over to center quite easily, but as Ray mentioned, an original is better quality and fit. Original ammeters have black paint on the brass internals, which the repro's I've seen don't. Also repro's use hex nuts on the back and originals use special slotted nuts, like those on the slant pole coils.

I was fortunate to find one on ebay a couple weeks ago that Dick Crabtree had listed. It works great. Originals do pop up. I search "model a ford ammeter" on a regular basis.

If you weren't worried so much about an original look, why not use a quality off the shelf ammeter that will fit the same opening?

Can't say I have ever seen "a quality off the shelf ammeter that will fit the same opening"... If you know of one, please let us know.

Hello, I have one that glass broke trying to fit the ammeter into repo dash. The ammeter came to bits and I can't work out how to get the needle refitted? Does it go between the brass and allie bit with the needle on it?

Cheers Graeme
