Default Exhaust whistle: where to install?

Cold wheather and lockdown made me build stuff to pass time. So I made me an exhaust whistle and after finishing it I just don`t know where to install it.
There is not enough space from the manifold till the rear end of the muffler.

So does it go in right after the muffler under the floorboard?
Does anybody have pictures showing where it is installed?
The operating lever and spring are still missing and will be put on after I installed the unit.
Thanks for any help.

They are most effective (loud) in the junction of the manifold & muffler but are the devil to mount there w/o leaks. I have mounted them at the end of the tail pipe even though it is a bit of a challenge there. Anywhere in the tailpipe would work.

I don’t think they are legal in my state but if you use antique plates you don’t have to have inspections and can get by with it I think. The cut out itself is what isn’t allowed.

That is pretty cool, have you sound tested?

It is not tested yet, only blowing in by myself. Not to loud then.
Actually this is my third version of it, all the others were no good. Leaking a lot and not sturdy.

Learning by doing.
So I will cut the tailpipe at the best spot after the muffler and extend the end of the tailpipe a little bit further out in the back.
In Germany we have to pass all vehicles through an inspection shop every two years. Costs a lot of money and they check really everything. You won`t pass if the wiper rubber is worn a bit.

The gadget here is not really legal, but the inspector probably will let it pass

( if he really notices it ) because it was original from 1929. If not, I just take it out and mount it again later.

Try the end of the exhaust before you do any cutting. That is where I have mine. Let me know if you need pics.

My recollection of some of the original exhaust whistles is that they would mount just before or in front of the muffler, under the car. Of course these were hard to find, so when the reproduction whistles came out, they mounted instead at the junction of the exhaust manifold and the muffler/tailpipe connection. The main problem with most exhaust whistles was that they would often not fully close back off once the connector chain (and valve) had been released, often leaving passengers to listen to the blow by through the whistle pipes until the valve opening returned to its fully closed position. Regardless, I would not encourage anyone to place a whistle behind the muffler itself, as the sound would be substantially diminished. J.C. Whitney used to make such a whistle that fit on the end of the tailpipe, but it produced nothing like the sound or volume of those placed in front of the muffler.

One other thought is that if the muffler is cut to allow for the whistle to be installed just in front of the muffler itself, it might prove expensive to remove the whistle from along the exhaust pathway of the muffler and return it to its original shape in the event that it did not produce the desired results.

Good luck with this regardless. There are few of these on cars these days, and the sound that they emit when on the open road is amazing in its similarity to that of an old locomotive.

My A has "Season Plates" on it. I can drive it on open roads from 1. April to end October. In Bavaria we have cold winters with lots of salt on the roads, so nobody wants to put an oldtimer out there to get it rusty.
In April I will put the car on my Pit ( still have one in my workshop ) and try test the whistle by putting it on the tailpipe first.
When it works to my satisfaction I can try to put it in the exhaust between manifold and muffler.
So I will keep you informed again in April.
Thanks a lot for your help !

PS: I already have a Wolf Whistle on the intake manifold. Just fun!

Thank you for the picture. The way the whistle is installed looks professionel.
In my car I do not have enough space for this. The airfilter is in the way.
Maybe I have to take that Filter out and put something different in.
We will see.
