Default Starters

Many cars have a slow and weak starter and blame usually goes to faulty ground. This is sometimes the problem, but there is another hidden thing that will cause a starter to be weak. Many rebuilt starters have 12 volt brushes in them. The brushes will fit and work, but the many stranded wire from the brush to the field coil is smaller on a 12 volt. You know what effect a 12 volt battery cable has on starting, right? Well the 12 volt brushes have the same result. Lots of the replacement brushes from parts stores are "fit all" 12 volt. If you will compare a NOS 18-11057 Ford brush set to some replacement sets you will see the difference. I have even seen 6 volt starters with 12 volt field coils! Wrong field coils and wrong brushes equal a very weak starter and a frustrated v8er!!

Thanks for that I don't have a problem that I know of but it is amazing some of the things that are done routinely, and never really thought about. Byron W.
