Hi. My 1940 ford needed the dash bazel replaced, I bought one from Dennis Carpenter it had a gasket and new clips. Do I have to take the Dash out of car or the isterment panel to replace the bazel? The clips look like they have to put on with insterment panel out. Thanks Winchester

You do not have to remove the dashboard from the cowl, but you do have to remove the instrument cluster, which isn't a horrible job if you are double-jointed. It can be done and it must come out. I am not a fan of those replacement clips, but if you're careful, they will do the job OK.

bob is correct. If you look under the dash you will see 4 little tabs with bolts that hold in the instrument cluster. Take photos of where the wires attach as you may have to disconnect them from all the gauges.You can see the 2 top tabs in this photo plus the 2 nuts. Two more are on the bottom edge. I don't recall why I put the black tape there other than to act as an anti rattler.

Winchester.....

I did this last Fall.....it was a pain in the ass ! Started at 8 am and finished at 5 pm. It is a tight space to get to to unscrew the bolts and then put them back in.

All I can say is.....just take your time and go slow. The 9 hours it took me was also taking the time to really do a good job cleaning the cluster facing and the gauges. I also cleaned the speedo and oiled it and the small wick on top where you put in a drop of oil and replace the plug.

I figured I would only do it once, so do a good job because i sure the hell didn't want to do it again !

19forty is correct......take your phone and snap a few photos under there so if you need a reference you have it.

A pillow under the head helps a lot while you're working upside down, with your feet draped over the seat back. It's pretty much a one (right)-handed job. Hope you're not left-handed.

Yes, it just seemed like a good idea. Probably not needed but it didn't hurt anything and doesn't show from the front.

If you have help, taking out the front seat makes working under the dash more comfortable and you can better concentrate on the task. A dremel tool with cut off wheel makes the clips quicker to remove and replace when ready. When there is a lot of work under the dash, like working on the vent an wipers also, it's much easier to take out the whole dash and build out. Good time to replace some of the wind cord if rotten. Fordy....I love that Deluxe dash. That Art Deco design is nice. When mine was cleaned up it looked great too !

An old post, I know, but thanks, 19Fordy, for posting the pics. On my 41pu the clamping plates were fitted wrong and I can now see how they should go. Obvious, really, but not to me.
