Default '30 / '31 Coupe: Thickness of Wood Header above windshield

I am about to install Interior Sun-Visors onto the wood header (above windshield) of my '31 Dlx Coupe. Before I select the length of the screws to be used, I am hoping that someone on the FORUM can tell me the depth of the wood header. i.e. what length screws can I use without risking any damage or interference with anything else that might be of concern.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance. - Doug Vieyra, Eureka, Calif

I have 2, 30 Sport Coupes apart now and I don't remember any screws, but I could be wrong. The wider slotted holes could work well with wood screws with std. taper heads so as to be nearly flush with the sheet metal. #8 x 3/4" or 1" would work. I think Pan head would be create a row of troublesome bumps for the hammer down trim strip.

My repo header was built up, solid 3/4 bottom with spacers to the top piece of wood. IMO you need to probe or remove the upholstery and see what you have.

Just to clarify my initial question:

What I am doing in adding (in addition to the exterior fixed metal visor) an INTERIOR adjustable Sun-Visor to the interior of my '31 Coupe. This adjustable INTERIOR Sun-Visor is from/for a 1932 Ford Coupe. It has two mounting brackets that are screwed into the wood header above the windshield. The hinges for the actual visor are of friction resistance, so some downward/upward pressure will be needed to activate them.

Hence, I am concerned that I have a firm and solid mounting attachment, ie screws buried deep into the wood header. Therefore I am concerned to get the maximum depth, without risking damaging anything, or going through, the wood header. So the lateral depth (fore and aft) of the wood header is what I need to know.

Short of an actual measurement, I will have to go with the time tested, "by guess and by golly".

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

hey Buddy
is this the area your asking about?
the header is tapered, and the bottom is about 2 in thick and it gets thicker the higher you go
so im sure 1-1/2 in screws would be fine
its hollow behind the metal

Be careful if you drill through the cloth material. I've had cloth get wrapped up in the drill bit and make a mess.

Thanks Tom, for the reminder.

Yes, I have drilled holes through the upholstery cloth when installing my '31 Coupe's 'Assist Straps' and Rear Window Shade - and it did not take long to discover how easily and reliably the drill bit grabs the material, and starts an exciting battle to save the material !

Got to hope your wood is in good shape. You probably have already thought about it, but it might be a good idea to drill and place one screw first rather than drill all the holes at once.
