Default 1940 ford rear fender bolt sealing

Searched through the barn and didn't see anything on what to use to seal the bolt/nut-clip area. "nut-clip...?"

It appeared on my parts car that Ford used some sort of "tar" like stuff applied to the fasteners on the inside of the car... is that a correct assumption? Did they put the stuff on the inside, or on the fender AND trunk sides of the bolt areas?

What do you guys use for the "tar" now?

Use "Heavy Duty Drip Check" sealer( made by 3M) that you can get at your local automotive paint store. You can also use the black window sealer sold at Napa Auto Parts. Part # 4121.

thanks! It would be kindah hard to put it on the fender side wouldn't it! ...the fender itself is kinda in the way!

I've had some "experienced" (ie: older) ford guys mention some sort of a putty, but they couldn't remember what it was called...

I use 3-M strip caulking on or behind the nut when a clip protrudes into a body area, don't worry about it if the area is in the open like the inside of a fender but it wouldn't hurt to do it there as well

You can use the "Drip Check" or window sealer to also seal the trim clips that protrude inside the body.
