Dimensions NEEDED......Front Driveshaft Splines (Torque Tube)
Hey folks......If anyone has a torque tube-type DRIVESHAFT laying around with it's FRONT splines easily accessible, I would sure appreciate a couple of fairly accurate measurements with a caliper. I need the MAJOR diameter across two of the raised splines on shaft, and I need the MINOR diameter......as measured across two opposite, LOW areas BETWEEN the raised splines. As U-joints from '28 thru '48 will all fit, any year V8-type shaft with CLEAN splines will suffice, but the dimensions need to be accurate. I have a U-joint which I've measured, but I need to see what kind of clearances exist between U-joint and the six splines on shaft.
Now, for the interesting part of all this, I'm really trying to figure-out the exact size and nomenclature of the Spicer-type U-joint (pictured below). This is one of CRAZYDADDIO's (from the HAMB) torque tube adapter kits from the past. He no longer makes these kits! Anyone familiar-enough with Spicer stuff that can head me in the right direction? I just need to know about the REAR half (rear yoke) on the pictured U-joint that'll fit an old Ford 6-spline driveshaft. Thanks for ANY help. DD |

Re: Dimensions NEEDED......Front Driveshaft Splines (Torque Tube)
V8coopman- I just measured a NOS driveline with a Browne and Sharpe caliper and best I can tell it is 1.090 across the high and .910 in the low. At least there isn't any wear on this but there is always measurement error!
P.S. not much left of that cross member! |

Your second MINOR dimension of 0.910" sound about perfect for our U-joint which is 0.926".........about 0.007" clearance. Thanks again! Anyone real knowledgeable about those Spicer-type joints? By the way, that's not my frame. It belongs to an awol F'Barner by the name of BLOODYJACK. DD |

Yeah, that shouldn't be a press fit! I will go measure it again...
checked 3 place on each spline, all of them are right at 1.090 or 1.091 I don't have another one to measure. |

deuce.......I'm sure your dimensions are accurate, and that there is a problem with this joint. More-importantly, you've given me the important dimension that I needed, and off of a pristine, new piece to boot. Very much appreciated! DD

Kube, I should have used a micrometer. I usually use the calipers to COMPARE things and a mic to MEAUSRE things. I know with your background you can get another decimal point accuracy!!

I have a '34 driveline on the shelf it it would help and live in south Houston if you want an actual drive line to check.

Re: Dimensions NEEDED......Front Driveshaft Splines (Torque Tube)
At one time I was looking at this stuff for an idea I had.
If I remember right; CRAZYDADDIO said in one of his posts that the rear yoke splines were machined special for him. I looked up the part numbers listed in Pete's post and while the U-joint numbers are regular 1310 joints; neither of the other numbers correspond to a regular yoke. One is a weld on 32 spline stub shaft and the other the matching slip yoke. I kinda questioned this in the other thread; but had no response. Last edited by rich b; 11-20-2015 at 04:33 PM. |

You're funny! I am certain your numbers are spot on. I know V8Coopman can get a bit obsessive at times. Perhaps more so than me. Yep, another "crazy" out there in Ford Land!
