Default It's Friday. Time for a Flathead video. Crusty Flatty Pt.11.

I run the vintage Buma boring bar through the non linered bores and take them to 45 thou over. I am still learning to use the machine but am getting the hang of it I think. I share my thoughts about the project and the questions going through my mind as I try to work out how to proceed.

Hi Mart, Thanks again for letting us into the shed. I'm not sure I love how a couple of those bores cleaned up. Can't wait for the next episode, should you put one out.

Mart: in 1964 my Dad and I did a ring job on my '50 two door sedan, when I pulled the heads we had a corner missing on one piston and a hole in another. I bought a two new pistons and a set of rings, rod bearings and a gasket set for $50. My dad borrowed a drill powered hone and we cleaned up the cylinders the best we could. We put it all back together and I proceeded to beat the crap out of it, as only a teenager could, the thing ran great and I kept it for two years before I inherited a 1960 Plymouth. As far as flathead's running good even though they weren't put together right, I was impressed.

It doesn't hurt to run a different size piston in a repaired cylinder. This was done at many a machine shop back in the day. I ran a .040 Piston in a stock engine just to fix one cylinder. Just make sure it's the same weight.

Just what I've been thinking --thanks Ron ! (still use your original
signed book).

I have a 35 v8 bored 82.5 over but 2 wrist pin clips let go --two
cylinders have two bad score grooves. All the rest seems serviceable-
including the poured babbit main bearings

Think i'll learn to use my 1930s Van Norman boring bar on a junker--
then bore the 2 cylinders to 125 hope the scores clean up -run 2 bores 40 over other 6!
If not ok --plan 2 -- sleave the cylinders run it !

Friends say Naah, Naah. I still want to do it

There isn't any reason why it wouldn't work, and back in the day it was a common practice. But, I think the pistons should weigh the same. I use a homemade beam balancer. and you don't have to worry about the crank, unless you plan on running over 6 grand.

A -35 engine wonīt take .125 without walls being to thin or even hitting water...
.0825 is over factory recomended size already...

Sleeves arenīt that badly priced...think i pay just north of $20 a piece...itīs the work involved that ad up to the final pricetag...
So if you can bore it yourself it will be a nice project with not to much cash involved.
I have made one -36 LB engine with threaded sleaves to get to some serious displacement and i still remember the pain in the rear...
Installing inserts in the block for smaller diam studs to stay out of the bore...Milling threads in the block with the CNC mill...Custom threaded sleeves...not going to happen again unless someone brings a serious amount of beer and steak...tricky so called friends has their ways...

Mart I watched all your videos at least once. They were the best detail given on a not so clean not real pretty block. Helped me get my 8ba down to a bare block today. Between inspiration and a little knowledge of what I'm looking at when I opened the oil pan it helped alot. Just have to clean it up now looks like its crack free but not sure until its cleaned and checked. Had a piston that bent a rod most likely the reason it was parked out in the back of a junkyard. Thank you for your time spent on the tear down and video editing.

Learned how to put liners in! Thanks.
That is a nice boring machine..Are they usually called motorcycle boring machines?
Nice to know things that can be done without 100k machine tools.
Mart, can you ever just hone a cylinder and then slide a new liner in if you don't care if you decrease the size of the bore? For people that have little money but need liners?
