Full-flow oil filter adaptation...
I have been looking at the full-flow oil filter kits that employ a redesigned valve cover, and a length of copper tube that slips inside the horizontal steel tube that supplies oil to the front section of the valve gallery.
It seems that that copper tube just telescopes inside the steel supply tube... wouldn't there be leakage ? It does not seem as though any "positive" type of sealing would occur with this set-up. Thanks, SC Frank |

Re: Full-flow oil filter adaptation...
If you are worried about what little "leakage" you would have there, fashion a "seal" around the copper tube. What little gets by the tube is really inconsequential.

Re: Full-flow oil filter adaptation...
it is a very snug fit, very little loss.
Oil filter gets pretty hot, so something must be happening......

Re: Full-flow oil filter adaptation...
Okay...
Is there any sort of relief valve in the filter so that the engine gets oil should the filter should clog ? ( I know this is unlikely, but if we're sending all of the pump output through filter, it seems like a possibility...) I would like to have a filter on my rebuilt engine, just want it to be effective and fail-safe. Frank |

Re: Full-flow oil filter adaptation...
I think a filter could only clog if maintenance is poor and if it is that poor, you are going to have trouble what ever setup you have.

It'll be going on a squeaky-clean, fresh rebuild.

Re: Full-flow oil filter adaptation...
We've used them on a couple of cars work very well. We add the 90 degree adapter available at speedway that allows the filter to be vertical. But that is just something that I like it lets you fill the filter before installing it.

Re: Full-flow oil filter adaptation...
Oil filters have a relief valve on them in case they get clogged. Get the adapter John mentions. Besides being easier to fill when they are vertical, and remove without spilling all over everything when removed, they do not drain half out when idle.

Re: Full-flow oil filter adaptation...
You can get a wrecking yard one off of a 4.0 Ford Explorer, its a little different, but if
you use the bolt that comes with it and take out the threaded nipple the filter goes on the bolt will screw right into the adapter plate. They can be had for $25-35 dollars. I've used a couple of them so far. I think thats the one goodoldvic used in the above post also. See his picture. |

Dodge,
Will this one work? It is off of a 2001 4.0 explorer. Regards, Neil |

Re: Full-flow oil filter adaptation...
Neil,
Looks like it would work. There should be another piece that goes thru the hole in the left side as pictured that would screw into the boss on the valve cover.

Most all the Model A vendors sell the valve cover type filter.
Here's a link to Snyder's listing: http://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/oil-filter-kit Mike's: http://www.mikes-afordable.com/product/A6705F.html Bratton's: https://www.brattons.com/oil-filter-kit.html

Yes Neil it will work, you should have the bolt that holds it on and an O-ring also.

I find there's only about a tablespoon loss of oil when changing after engine shutdown for about an hour. Half the oil in the filter drains very quickly into the valve chamber. Just hold a rag or paper towel under the front of the filter while you quickly spin it off. You can fill the filter about half way with new oil and spin it on without spilling. Best part about the filter is it gives another quart of oil in the system. |
