VIN Stamping Tool?
Is there a place to rent (with a hefty deposit) the dyes for stamping the frame? Mine is barely legible. Thanks.

Re: VIN Stamping Tool?
If you are a member of a Model A club, they may have a set of stamps.
Otherwise try a local machine shop. |

Re: VIN Stamping Tool?
You know of course that the number is covered by the body (if you are looking at the correct, original number)? My advice would be to leave it alone. If you mess with it someone may think you are trying to hide something. If it ever becomes an issue it could be raised with acid. Once it is read and the body put back on no one will ever see it. I assume your DMV will want to put a tag on the door jam.

Re: VIN Stamping Tool?
He has a BB...serial should be visible both on clutch housing and frame from under hood. I personally think messing with one that is even close to readable is a mistake.
I have a set of stamps with the late font, I must admit, and there is an A out there somewhere (NOT mine) registered from my stamp set....but I have never tried the stamps for fit into factory numbers. If there is the slightest difference, the numbers will look restamped, quite possibly causing you trouble somewhere down the road. BB--your original and primary number is the powertrain one, on your banger stamped on a flat on the bellhousing up hill a short ways from the starter. That number, the actual motor number, was stamped at the Rouge when your powertrain passed inspection, then shipped off to your local assembly plant. At the plant, the motor number was copied onto the frame during final assembly. The number on the bell is generally better stamped than the one on the frame. |

Re: VIN Stamping Tool?
Actually I think stamping any number on a vehicle in order to register it is against the law.

Then I strongly suggest you don't take your newly restamped vehicle into your DMV (or other state licensing authority) and say "look where I did this nice number stamping"!

Re: VIN Stamping Tool?
Most DMVs know that the VIN on a Model A is the engine number, and that the frame number cannot be seen.
It is a good idea to put the VIN in several locations on your Model A just in case it is ever stolen. I stamp the VIN into strips of aluminum, and hide a few in various places throughout my Model As.

Hidden numbers are a good idea. Best to use your own ID number and not reproduce a VIN: number. That way there is no question about legality; and you can provide your confidential identifiers location to the police if vehicle is stolen.

Re: VIN Stamping Tool?
Thanks to all - good points mentioned. Neither the frame or the bell housing stamping is totally readable. I will try to get some sort of "DMV-approved" official to come and verify the number before I put the left fender on. Maybe if the official sees the almost-readable number in both places, it will be fine.

Re: VIN Stamping Tool?
Altering a serial number is illegal. But restoring faded numbers shouldn't be a problem. Just make damn sure you use the correct reproduction stamps so everything is copasetic.

Re: VIN Stamping Tool?
Thanks Charlie - I hadn't 'met' the truck when the fender was removed, so I had no idea that the number would still be visible. I appreciate the info. I will let you know when I put the fender back on.

Re: VIN Stamping Tool?
You have to remove the fender AND splash apron.

Re: VIN Stamping Tool?
As it was pointed out to me earlier this guy is working on a Model BB and the number should be visible with the fender installed. I still can't figure out why this is posted in the Model A forum, maybe I am missing something.
