starter rod assembly
I need help from the experts again. In recent months I have asked several questions concerning a 1930 Tudor. Reason is we are in the process of restoring a 30 Tudor for my 14-year old grandson. He became the proud owner of the car in early March. He is much involved in the restoration and the goal is to have it in excellent condition when he turns 16. He wants to drive it to high school.
The question of the day concerns the starter rod that protrudes through the bottom of the firewall. I ordered a repair kit for all the grommets and screws that that mount to the firewall. For the starter rod two rubber grommets were supplied. All that is on the fire wall is a hole. Looking at two other Model A's, both with indented firewalls I see a metal cup riveted to the firewall. On the 30 Tudor there is a threaded boss on either side of the hole and two screw came with the grommets. It would seem to me that there should be some kind of a metal cup involved. What say the experts. All advice will be appreciated. Attached photo of the two grommets and attached photo of my grandson the day his 30 Tudor arrived. Tom Endy |

Re: starter rod assembly
WOW. I feel humbled to give Tom Endy advice. My '30 town sedan has the rubber grommet and the metal clip screwed to the firewall from the engine side. Be proud grandpa! Looks like a good car and a good kid you have there.

Re: starter rod assembly
Good morning, Tom. My '30 Town Sedan has this metal piece with the grommet. https://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/p...earchbykeyword It is mounted on the inside of the firewall with the two screws. There isn't a hole drilled for the third hole but the three holes in the cover are positioned around the center hole so it appears there should be. The picture shows the two screws protruding thru the firewall. I will try to get a picture of the inside a little later.
I am not 100% this is correct but this is the way it was installed when I bought the car and all I have done is replaced the old, hard grommet. Snyder's also has this type of metal cover with two mounting holes. https://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/p...earchbykeyword Hope this helps? Hmmm, just noticed the Phillips screws... Re: starter rod assembly
Many thanks for the information and the kind words. I see the problem, I am missing the grommet cover, part number A11481. I had ordered two part numbers from Bratton's, one was all the screws for the firewall, the other was all the grommets for the firewall. The two screws needed were included with the screws, and the grommet bag contained both the grommet for the 30, and the indented firewall. My Victoria and my friends 31 pick-up are both indented firewalls and each has a round cover that is riveted to the engine side of the firewall. That is what confused us.
It appears there in nothing that attaches to the inside of the firewall on a 30 and all I need to do is mount the oval grommet in the cover from the engine side. It is off to the Model A store to get the A11481 grommet cover. Tom Endy |

Re: starter rod assembly
I believe the originals were all rivited. The replacements I believe come with the screws.
