Default High-volume oil pump... advantages / disadvantages ?

Am thinking about upgrading to a high-volume oil pump for my rebuilt A engine.

Will be a stocker, aside from modern valves and adjustable lifters. Might get a 5.5 head after it's well broken in.

Car is fully stock '28 coupe, original rear, 21" tires, etc.

I won't be thrashing this engine, but it will see some serious road-time.

Would there be any advantages or serious downsides to going with a high-volume oil pump ?

Did you install an oil filter? In a stock engine, as long as the valve gallery and dipper tray fill up all you would be doing is circulating the oil faster into the over flow tube and over the dam at the front to fill the dipper tray. The mains would only be pulling so much oil from the valve gallery through the tubes. I don't see that it would hurt anything.

I think I was told that is only for a Pressurized system.

How much more volume do you need? Why?
Vince,

Not sure... "more is better" ?

But would not want to flood the valve gallery with so much oil that it gets pulled up through the intake guides...

If the stock pump already furnishes "more than enough", then I guess that is good enough.

First find out if it is a full-pressure engine, with pressure to the rods via a drilled crank. If so, a higher volume pump is desirable in order to have some pressure at hot idle. If not full pressure, not needed.

FYI, if this is still a stock flatheaded A engine, oil will not be 'pulled'up through valve guides', to my knowledge/experience.

If you decide to go with the higher volume oil pump, you should at least consider changing out the side valve cover, and drain back tube, to the later style, which has larger cast drain holes in the cover. These cast-in drain back ports are set lower in the cover to allow the oil to drain from the valve chamber faster, based on the idea this would reduce oil leakage and foaming. Now if you insist on continuing on building up a points car, and not considering installing a valve cover full flow oil filter......Why bother with a high volume pump ?
