Default How to: remove wrist-pin from OEM Rod & Piston ?

I am going-over a "new" engine before dropping it into my car.

I would like to separate the rod from the pistons - both are OEM Ford parts.

The service manuals suggests heating the piston in boiling -water before installing the pin, now about for removal ?

I would prefer not to damage anything in the disassembly process...

Thanks !

Frank

I believe normally wrist pins are pressed out.

There is a tool for R&R wrist pins. You can improvise with a piece of all thread a few washers two nuts and a couple of sockets. Take care not to bugger up the side of piston.

If the wrist pin has keepers, remove them and tap out the pin. If no keepers, there is one in the center of the wrist pin hole holding the wrist pin in the piston.
Use a can big enough to hold the piston, pour in the boiling water, let set for maybe a minute, use a driver and tap out the pin. Has worked for me several times.

Out is just using something slightly smaller than the pin-/ going together with center locks is where the tarred pilot tool is needed

If it has the original center lock pins, just give the end of the pin a sharp rap with a punch, it will jump out of the groove. Once it is out of the groove, tap it the rest of the way out, takes longer to type it than to do it.
