Re: Ford winged speedo
With rebuilt model A speedometers being offered at $225 for the common brand, I'd then wonder if the unit is functional as is. If it is then it's in the ballpark as far as price is concerned.

Re: Ford winged speedo
It all depends on condition. Is the faceplate clean and clear? These are not available reproduction and restoring them is not an option. The advantage of the Johns-Manville is that most of the interior components are brass-not pot metal like the Stewarts, so they are easier to repair. You should be able to spin the shaft and see if the needle moves. If it does, and the face is clean, the price of 250.00 is very fair.

Re: Ford winged speedo
Ballpark would be about 1914 to 1917. Johns Manville would more than likely be the Ford Special. That model used a different drive and gear at the wheel then say the Stewarts.

The JM speedometer used a centrifugal type weight to make the needle move and is a good speedometer. The internal frame is made of pot metal, but in my experience restoring these speedometers, the pot metal is usually in good condition. For the price you are about to pay, the lens should not be cracked and the silver dial face should be clean. I hope this helps, Russ Furstnow |
