1961 Starliner glass question
So in the future I`ll be starting on my starliner and will be removing the glass. The car has tinted glass that I love and I`m tossing and turning about removing the back window and effing it up.
I`m sure a replacement will not only be hard to find but bloody expensive. So I`ll looking for tips and advise. Thanks. |

Re: 1961 Starliner glass question
Last '61 Starliner I sold couple years ago was a mess, other than good backlight and roof trim. Went for $700, to somebody specifically for above items. I'd be real careful and think whether it has to come out or not. If you do take it out, cut all the old seal all the way around the glass on the outside to the point you can push the glass out easily. You may have to cut back under the trim, which may come with the glass/seal on removal. They go in a lot easier with a new seal. the risk is getting them out. DO NOT pry or lift on one corner when removing.

Re: 1961 Starliner glass question
go with above information wait for warm weather let the sun warm the seal I'm guessing it's set in a rubber gasket slice from the top at roof line and under the glass line {between the glass an rubber} on the outside you should be able to expose the edge of the glass when you have it exposed all around apply pressure from the inside pushing gently around the glass and it should come out you can't cut to much gasket as your not using it again so hack away good luck

Re: 1961 Starliner glass question
those were my thoughts also since this glass is hard to find just offered some tricks that have worked in the past according to budget the flip side is no guarantee that the glass man won't break it and he is not responsible if it breaks

Re: 1961 Starliner glass question
some things are better left to the experts at glass shops, and this is one of them, an expensive and hard to find part to take a chance on breaking, have a good glass shop remove and reinstall it, the other thing to leave to the professionals is upholstery work, one crooked seam, especially in a head liner can ruin the job and your day

Re: 1961 Starliner glass question
Just as rare as the Rear Glass on these 1961 Starliners, is the Windscreen. The only cars that the Windscreen is interchangeable with are the 1960/61 Starliner, plus the 1960 Edsel Coupe. However, the Windscreens may have been available as replacements at some time, but any remaining would not be cheap. The Windscreens out of the Convertible or regular Hardtops do not interchange.

Here are some pictures of a very nice 1961 Ford Starliner that I saw at a recent Toowoomba Swap Meet.

Re: 1961 Starliner glass question
You see them often here in the states. The '61s that is. Which is weird because there were something like 50,000 1960s made and about 29000 '61s. More 61s around for some reason. I've got a '60 and you hardly ever see those.
