Default '40 brake adjustment

Did a search and found the post on the pedal rod to piston (spool) clearance. The clearance is clearly shown on page 30 of the 32-41 Service manual, but not the amount so the post covered that well with the rattle test. Is there a typical amount of free travel in the brake pedal before it engages the spool ?
Thank you.

OK, can you decode this for some of us, what is a spool?? The piston inside of the master cylinder?

Russ....I was told online here 1/4" of rattle clearance. That's what I set mine at. Works fine for me.

russcc: Be sure to check for wear on the clevis pins and rods when you adjust your "free play" at the master cylinder and linkage. I adjust the free play to be be as little as possible.

Thank you. The piston looks like a spool to me.

I usually try for 1/8". My hot rodded '32 has a return spring that brings the pedal up to a small rubber bumper on the bottom of the wood floorboard. When I push the pedal, it's from the bumper about 1/8" down till the rod touches the master's piston.
