Default Spring shackle wear

Does anybody have a feel for how long spring shackles last (i.e. how many miles) when installed new and greased regularly? Of course there are lots of variables, but I'm wondering in anyone with lots of mile under their belts has had to replace them on a semi-regular basis. Also, seeing as how they're under so much tension it seems like they can probably tolerate quite a bit of wear before it starts to noticeably affect how the car feels. Cheers, Giles
