Default Most efficient way to remove a camshaft

I'm trying to replace my cam and lifters without pulling the head. Is it possible? The springs still load the lifters even with the keepers removed, and to remove the springs I will have to remove the head and lift the valves. Any ideas, or will I simply have to bite the bullet and take off the head?

According to Les Andrew's Book, page 1-46 it can be removed via the front timing gear cover (yeah removing that).

You need to remove the head and valves
do not forget to remove the oil pump gear

Also, keep the valves in order, along with everything else. FWIW

I have done it before without removing the head. I had a 3/4 cam in one and wasn't happy with it , switched back to a stock b grind

Remove valve cover
Remove all valve keepers and springs push valves up pull up lifters and wire up to hold them up
Remove distributor and oil pump drive gear
Remove radiator front timing cover
And them camshaft
Install in reverse and reset all valve clearances
An evening job
