Default Generator jumper wire

Hi, I've seen a few post of people talking about keeping a jumper wire in the vehicle in case the cut out goes bad. Where would you jump it from? One side of the cut out to the other?

Yes from one side to the other, when you shut the car off ,remove jumper wire.

And if the cutout stick closed be sure to remove the wire going to the firewall when you stop the engine, or you can burn up the genertor. I've always used an original cutout and never had a problem with it.

Ok, should you connect the jumper wire while it running or before you start it, I tried jumping them with it running and the motor would try shutting off.

Either way should be OK. If the generator gets above idle, it can put out as much as 40 volts if it isn't connected to the battery, which will overheat it and burn it out. It'll take some time and speed to fry it, so either before or after starting the engine is OK.
