Default Head puller in Cincinnati area?

I just bought a tired 'A' engine from a hot rod shop that pulled it out of a customer's coupe that is being sacrificed to build a hot rod . The good part (for me) is that it has the large cast B police head on it, which will complement my new IB-330 cam very nicely. I've been tearing the motor down to rebuild it and the head is pure-D stuck. I see three options: buy Stipe's puller for about $75, build one for a few hours work, or find someone in the area who has one languishing in their shop who might rent/loan it. I like this third option because it means meeting some 'A' folk in the area.

Some people have forced rope into the combustion chambers and then turned the engine over. This may work in your case IF your engine is not frozen.
Paul in CT Do a search also as this has been discussed before.

I have an engine that I've been trying to remove the head on also. I tried the rope trick & now have a locked engine. The rope is compressed & the starter can't budge. I spent several hours making a puller like the "Gord's Easy Puller". I haven't had any luck there either. I don't know if the threaded rod I'm using for pulling is binding in the holes in the plate or not. I have drilled the 2 holes for the spark plug bolts to 9/16" The other holes are slightly over 7/16". I'm also hindered by the fact that the distributor broke off in the head & the shaft is sticking above the head about 3". The shaft was a one piece so I know it's not going anywhere unless the head comes up. I am reluctant to use heat as I have gas in the tank & the carb doesn't stop dripping gas completely. The head is a high speed which I don't want to ruin. I want to stay away from driving wedges in to pop the head. I've been soaking the studs off & on for a month with liquid wrench & WD40. No luck so far. For those with experience with "Gord's Puller" I'm wondering what you think about making the holes in the plate larger or will that make the situation worse?

Well, fellows, I've gone ahead and bought Stipe's puller, so now we know where one is in the Cincinnati area. It worked great on a massively stuck police head. Anybody need to borrow it??? Just send me a PM!

I, too, bought a head puller, but only AFTER I finally got the head pulled. Didn't have to worry about damaging the head, as it was already cracked. I've since used it twice on my own equipment, but my friends have used it more than I have.

I looked up VanPelt and it appears to be a very interesting shop in Batavia (20 min from here) that specializes in those gorgeous flathead V8's. I'm going to drive over there when Herm Kohnke finishes with my other motor and I'm on the road again. In the meantime I'm just a boardless hodad.

I wouldn't recommend it but I used a gasket scrapper, tapped it in with a hammer in about 4 places btwn the head and block to break it loose, no damage incurred.

I will have to check him out. I'm not that far from Batavia.
