Default Re: Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question

I did it a long, long time ago - in the late 80s.lI think. Removed the stock flattie and 3-speed and then later installed a 350/350 combo. Engine hoist hook was more to the back of the engine, no radiator installed, most accessories off the motor. The tail of the T350 was just high enough foe me to get close, pick up and and swing the tailshaft in whole pulling the hoist towards the car. I was about 38 or so and I was n pretty good shape to do it. Once the motor and trans were in the engine bay I used my floor jack under the tail shaft of the tranny to pull the combo back as I jockeyed it into position. Wishbones were split and the T350 trans mount was not yet bolted in and the wishbones were spread out .....

These days it’s easier to leave the hood on but pull off the nose imho ...... too old to attempt this now! Lol!

I removed the engine in my sedan without taking the hood off, I always remove the carb and use axle straps that are used on trailer tie downs; put them on the exhaust manifolds and also remove the radiator and out the engine comes.

I've done it by removing only the hood and radiator but, am wondering if it's really necessary.

Anyone done it that way? Thanks, JIM

I know what you're up to! You're wanting to throw one of those ARDUN thingies in there. We've seen you lusting over there on that currently-running ARDUN thread. I wonder if those valve covers will clear the inner fender panels at the front on a '40? DD

Ok V8, you got me.

Please be the first to donate to my pending (all done) ARDUN GO FUND ME page.

I recall that in 1995 I went to the Columbus NSRA show and there was a real steel '32 Ford roadster with a full tilt ARDUN in it for sale for $35K. It was blue and it was really nice. Seemed like a fortune then.

A fellow named Dick Blaine was also there with his red '32 Ford Ardun powered beauty. Wasn't for sale. He was nice and told me all about it as it was the first time I ever saw an ARDUN. Wonder if he still has it?

I would and I did in my ‘53. Certainly not sorry. I did the “Ardun/Stick” thing and my wife didn’t like driving the car. After putting in an AOD, EPS and Air, she likes it. Guess I am a really P...y whipped, lol! However, no bitches about how much money I spent and I have a relief driver. An old time rodder since I was 12 (now 80, she is 78) I love the “slush box.” I even put in power brakes. Yea, I might have more suds with a stick, but then who wants to beat up a $50K engine? The choices:

1. Ardun with a stick = a one person car
2. Ardun with a slush box = owning an Ardun with peace and harmony
3. No Ardun at all

You make the choice!

Well spoken. Sounds to me like ARDUN has
"DUN" just fine, keeping all his ducks in a nice straight line.
His car is a beauty and a piece of history. A work of art and mechanical wonderment.

If I were ever to be so lucky, I'd hope to be just as plucky.

Got to go check my " ARDUN Go Fund Me" page again. So far, I've got zero.
Maybe the PPP check will soon arrive so I can use "the people's money" to fund
my pet project just like the politicians do.

OK, I guess you win (kind'a sorta) with your 1,2,3! But what good is it to spend $50K on an engine that ya can't "beat-up" on a little? Ronnieroadster sure ain't reluctant to "whang" on his Arduns every now and then. Ya know, you could always build another one for days when Momma decides to stay at home! Joking aside though, the one you have created there sure is SLICK! DD

Thanks guys, to be honest, I do push the pedal once in awhile. No, not as gutsy as a standard tranny though. However, adequate. Don’t think my pocketbook could stand another ARDUN Since my ARDUN heads are first gen and serialized sequentially, you can bet there is a lot of TLC. I applaud Ronnie and learned from him. Oh, bragging rights: I have an original that is still running in a ‘53 and yes, I take the hood off when removing the engine.

[QUOTE=Mart;1889769]I've taken a 59A style motor from my 40 coupe without removing anything except the radiator. Mine was a deluxe model. I did take out the trans cover. If you undo the hood supports the hood will open higher than normal and in my case I tied it back to the rear bumper with a rope.

You have to attach the hoist to the motor very low down.

Mart.

A strong gust of wind comes along and your hood will end up in the front seat.

The problem is not getting the engine out, it's getting it back in. We pulled the 221 out of my dads 1939 deluxe but fought with it, getting it back in. While pulling it out, the engine pulled towards you, when putting it back in, you will fight with lining up the trans to the back of the motor because it sits back some. We pulled the front bumper and grill, it went in easily. While the bumper are off, replace your bumper gaskets (rubber bushing around the bumber rails, cheap fix).
