Default water pump packing

This might sound like a stupid question......but. My water pump has been leaking so I ordered water pump packing. I received two round packings. Do I put both on or just one and tighten nut. Thanks

Sounds like the ones you have would normally be used when the pump is all apart. If they are truly are a sealed "washer" I would cut a diagonal slot all the way through ,like the picture shows, and using only one add it to what was already there.

I cleaned out my old packing and used both new lead packings. Be sure to smear lots of grease on them before sticking them into the brass nut. Later nuts aren't brass, but are the same shape.
